2019 - 2020
Well. While COVID-19 has caused quite the unorthodox end to my first two semesters at University of Cincinnati, I’ll try and put that aside for the moment and recount my beginnings at UC, CEAS, and UC Honors.
I began classes at UC ahead of many due to incoming AP credits and work experience, which put me on a slightly different schedule than most. By far my most difficult class first semester was Calc II. While other math classes were somewhat physically based, something I could visualize and relate to, Calc II was almost entirely theory. I passed the class, but not without sacrificing a lot of time and effort to studying and reviewing material. As for my other classes; ENED wasn't much fun, Chemistry and English built off of what I’d already learned in high school, and Gateway to Honors provided a smooth transition to the requirements and expectations of Honors at UC. In December of 2019 I also completed my first honors experience, “Combat Robot Build and Competition.” This was a self-designed experience created to provide credit for my hobby of combat robotics. Since high school my combat robot Razors Edge has been a top performer in the field, finally scoring first place in the Fall 2019 competition. |
Spring semester has been… Interesting. My schedule was significantly better than fall semester due to the priority scheduling honors provides, allowing me to continue working three days a week at Triangle Precision Industries. While my hardest class is still a math class, Multivariable Calc has been much more tangible than Calc II. ENED 1120 is more of the same from ENED 1110. Engineering Graphics has been quite easy, as I already do everything the course teaches at my job. Into to coop is staightforward, as expected. And American Military History is surprisingly fun.
The decision to move classes online with the threat of COVID-19 hasn’t affected me too much. I do save 2 hours of driving each day not having to commute to campus, so that’s a plus. ENED 1120 was the only class majorly affected by this decision, but I can’t say I’m sad to see the cut content go. My second honors experience was planned around the Spring 2020 Xtremebots competition, but that has since been cancelled. I will soon begin working on more improvements to RAZORS EDGE and documenting my progress in a video. While the honors experience won’t include competition, I hope to showcase what my improvements and manufacturing would have consisted of. In short, my first two semesters at UC weren’t bad. I hope to become more involved with campus activities and experiences and expand the scope of my self-design experiences in future semesters. Look out for my second honors experience, hopefully up on the site soon, and I'll be back to add more next year! |
